♔ Modern Batik Art Workshops
Saturday, 20 August 2011 @ 13:45 |
hihi guys! long time no see :)
As some of you already know, I've been doing some modern Batik art at Batik workshops for the past few weeks with an amazing artist, David Kibuuka who's a co-creator of the Modern Batik Art technique and is recognized internationally as the leading expert in the field.
Batik is a technique where wax is applied to fabric using water soluble dyes. Modern Batik technique is a revolutionary repackaged application that enhances the detail of an image on fabric using wax and dyes. The effect that can be achieved through resistant dyeing often results in amazing, unpredictable textures and tone. Modern Batik designs can be as complicated or as simple as the artists desires. They can be realistic and pictorial or purely expressive. The main goal, when working with Modern Batik art, is to enjoy the medium and allow the versatility of wax and dyes to reveal itself gradually to you on fabric. Modern batik technique is fun and easy to experiment with as it leads to more discoveries and lends itself to personal creativity and self expression.
I've produced in total of 7 pieces, 2 of them are banners for the community :)

--------------
First Workshop - Beginners Class
First piece, a fish swimming in the water/ocean... took me more than 2 days to finish this
*so slow*
Outlining with a calligraphy pen + black ink! This is my second work + first portrait... I MESSED UP HER SKIN!!! she looks so pink D;
--------------
Second Workshop - Train the Trainer
Teaching seniors! got paid $20/hr (9hrs in total) *v* Mr. Plushie and I are both in there :D
--------------
Third Workshop - 3 feet x 5 feet Modern Batik Flag Banners
Workplace! Mr. Plushie and I are in there, but I am not telling you where XD
5 Banners
--------------
Fourth Workshop - 3 feet x 5 feet Modern Batik Flag Banners
My and Mr. Plushie's original African masks banner in process :)
Final!!! The top mask is mine and the bottom one is Mr. Plushie's :D
5 banners
Love this work so much, especially the background... it's by 3 Grade 12 students :)
--------------
Fourth Workshop - Individual Pieces After Finishing the Banners
Adding some skin tones to her :)
Anime Final :) ... I guess anime does look good in Modern Batiks :D
Mr. Plushie's anime drawing :D I believe it's one of her OCs...
Testing out a new technique (seem on her body) There was a huge spot of ink spilled on this piece because there was this volunteer guy who helps around the shop accidentally spilled the ink cartage onto my piece... I reacted and tried my best to wash it out as fast and as hard as I can, but it didn't work.. so yah... haha... you can't see it because I cut it out on Photoshop XD
My last piece + my fastest piece (30 mins) from a left over fabric on my table... I didn't want to waste it so I quickly took it and drew whatever that came to my mind and finish it before the class is over D"X It was painful especially the removing wax part...
--------------
There might be an exhibition for us soon and feature one of our work :D
Overall, I had a amazing experience and fun in this workshop. I will definitely join again next summer if possible :D
Mr. Plushie and I are currently working our way into the Modern Batik Movement where we get to make some profits from doing workshops for others and sell our works, learn about exhibitions, and gain more experience *v*
